Important Information About Canine Dysautonomia (CD)

Below are several articles and resources regarding Canine Dysautonomia (CD).
Unfortunately, Colorado, Kansas and Missouri are currently major hot spots for this disease. Research is still ongoing, but early awareness is critical.

What You Need to Know

Canine Dysautonomia is a serious and often fatal autonomic nervous system disorder, and early recognition of symptoms is essential. If you suspect CD, your dog must be seen immediately at one of the leading research centers:

  • Kansas State University (K-State)

  • University of Wyoming

These universities are currently leading CD research and are best equipped to diagnose and treat affected dogs.

Symptoms of Canine Dysautonomia

Dogs with CD may show one or more of the following signs:

Early Symptoms

  • Sudden loss of appetite

  • Vomiting or regurgitation

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Weight loss

  • Drooling or reduced ability to swallow saliva

  • Dilated pupils that do not respond to light

Neurological & Autonomic Symptoms

  • Constipation or difficulty passing stool

  • Urinary retention (unable to urinate normally)

  • Reduced tear production (dry eyes)

  • Elevated third eyelid (“cherry eye”-like appearance)

  • Fecal or urinary incontinence in later stages

  • Poor gag reflex

  • Weakness or lethargy

  • Decreased ability to regulate body temperature

Advanced/Severe Symptoms

  • Megaesophagus (enlarged esophagus)

  • Aspiration pneumonia due to regurgitation

  • Severe dehydration

  • Drastic weight loss

  • Collapse or sudden deterioration

If you see multiple symptoms—especially regurgitation, dilated pupils, urinary issues, or GI changes—seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
